Do This Before You Publish, Send or Post

Want better engagement? More connection? One simple step can help you get there—before you even hit “post.”

Ask This Question First

Before you publish your next social post, send your next email, or post your next blog, pause for a moment and ask someone you trust:

“How does this [post/email/blog] make you feel?”

If their answer is not sure or not much,” don’t expect a lot of engagement.

A dog lays on with his chin on the floor looking disinterested and disengaged.

Why?
Because if you want people to do something, you need to make them feel something first.

Emotions are the drivers behind actions and decisions—more so than facts, data, or even the best intentions.

What Do You Want Your Audience to Know, Feel, and Do?

Here’s a tip: if you want better feedback when you ask someone how your message feels, set yourself up for success by asking this key question before you start writing:

“What do I want my audience to know, feel, and do as a result of this message?”

Let’s say you’re sending a webinar invitation.

You probably want your audience to know:

  • The topic

  • The date, time, and location

  • How to register

  • When the deadline is

You also want them to do something:
Click the button. Sign up. Register. That’s simple enough.

But here’s what can make the difference:

Think about how you want them to feel.

  • Do you want them to feel excited about learning something that will help them grow?

  • Do you want them to feel special—like they’ve been personally invited into something exclusive?

  • Do you want them to feel a sense of urgency because seats are limited?

Each feeling you want to evoke will shape the tone, framing, and language of your message.

The Bottom Line

Facts, stats, and data help build credibility. But it’s emotion that creates connection—and drives action.

The best communications balance both. But if you want your audience to engage, share, sign up, or show up… they need to feel something first.
